The U.S. Office of Management and Budget has merged
the Baltimore
Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) and Washington,
DC MSA to officially create
the Washington/Baltimore Consolidated Metropolitan Statistical
Area (CMSA).
This CMSA stretches from Northern Virginia through most
of the State of
Maryland to the Pennsylvania line.
With an estimated year 2000 population of 7.3 million
persons, the Washington/Baltimore CMSA represents the
fourth largest consolidated market in the US with only
New York/Northern New Jersey, Los Angeles/Orange County
and Chicago/Gary having larger populations. The Washington/Baltimore
CMSA ranks first in median household income among the
Nation's Metropolitan areas with a median income of
$59,450 in 2000.
